From aspiration to action: Advancing sustainable development in LLDCs through the Awaza Programme of Action

The Awaza Programme of Action for the Decade 2024-2034 was adopted by the General Assembly in December 2024. The adoption of the Programme of Action marked a pivotal milestone in the collective efforts to accelerate inclusive and sustainable development in LLDCs.

The Third UN Conference on LLDCs (LLDC3) was held in Awaza, Turkmenistan, from 5-8 August 2025 under the theme “Driving Progress through partnerships” with the aim of fostering global partnerships to drive the implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action. The Awaza Programme of Action builds upon the lessons learned from the Vienna Programme of Action (VPoA) and responds directly to the persistent and evolving structural challenges faced by LLDCs, including limited access to global markets, insufficient infrastructure, high trade costs, low diversification, and increasing vulnerability to external shocks such as climate change, conflict, and global economic uncertainty.

This year’s Ministerial Meeting takes place at a pivotal moment, building on the momentum of the LLDC3 Conference and the follow-up to the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4). As the international community marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, this meeting provides a timely platform for LLDCs to reflect on the outcomes of LLDC3, consolidate progress from FFD4, offer strategic guidance for the implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action, and reaffirm the importance of multilateral cooperation in advancing sustainable development.
