Global LLDC Workshop Concludes with Renewed Momentum to Strengthen Trade and Transport Connectivity

New York, 11 May 2026 — The United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), in collaboration with key UN partners, successfully concluded the Global Workshop on Advancing Trade and Transport Connectivity for Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), held from 5–8 May 2026 at the United Nations Office at Nairobi.

The four-day global workshop brought together policymakers from LLDCs and transit countries, alongside technical experts, development partners, and financial institutions, to strengthen evidence-based approaches to trade and transport connectivity—a critical enabler for sustainable development in landlocked nations.

LLDCs continue to face structural challenges due to their lack of direct access to the sea, resulting in higher trade costs, infrastructure gaps, and limited integration into the global economy.

The workshop delivered practical training and fostered peer exchange through two interconnected segments. Participants gained hands-on experience in evaluating trade and transport costs and identifying bottlenecks along transit corridors, as well as learning how to develop bankable infrastructure projects and leverage digital innovations to facilitate trade and improve connectivity.

Driving Skills, Solutions, and Partnerships

Throughout the sessions, participants engaged with cutting-edge analytical tools, explored financing strategies, and examined real-world case studies, strengthening their capacity to design and implement impactful policies. The workshop also promoted collaboration across countries and institutions, reinforcing the importance of partnerships in overcoming shared challenges.

The outcomes of the workshop are expected to contribute to enhanced national capacities, including improved trade cost analysis, stronger project preparation pipelines, and increased adoption of digital solutions—supporting implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action for the Decade 2024–2034.

“This workshop has demonstrated that practical tools, strong partnerships, and innovative thinking are essential to unlocking the full potential of landlocked developing countries. By strengthening technical capacities and advancing bankable solutions, we are helping turn commitments under the Awaza Programme of Action into tangible progress on the ground,”

— Tomas González, Senior Programme Management Officer and Team Lead, LLDCs, UN-OHRLLS

“Mongolia is confident that this workshop will generate valuable insights and contribute meaningfully to our shared objective of enhancing connectivity and reducing trade and transport costs for LLDCs”,

— H.E. Ambassador Enkhbold Vorshilov, Co-Chair of the Awaza Programme of Action for LLDCs, Advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia

“The Awaza Programme of Action benefits not only LLDCs but also contributes to global stability, prosperity, and investment”

— H.E. Ambassador Guadalupe Jeanne Palomeque de la Cruz, Director General of Multilateral Relations, Bolivia, Chair of Group of LLDCs

Looking Ahead

The Global LLDC Workshop marks an important step in advancing sustainable connectivity solutions for landlocked developing countries. Building on the knowledge and partnerships forged in Nairobi, participants are expected to translate insights into concrete actions that improve trade efficiency, strengthen infrastructure planning, and accelerate sustainable development outcomes.
