Migration is one of the defining features of the 21st century and is integral to social and economic development. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognized the role of international migration in achieving inclusive social and economic development. At least 10 of the 169 targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include references to issues directly pertaining to international migration, migrants, and mobility. These include targets under goal 4 on scholarships for study abroad, under goal 8 on labour rights of migrants, and under goal 10 on facilitating orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration, including through the implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies. Migration will have a significant impact on the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Indeed, many of the SDGs can only be fully achieved if migrants and their contributions to development are taken into account. Conversely, differing development outcomes are likely to influence migration patterns well into the future.<\/p>\n
The General Assembly, in its resolution 73\/241, decided to convene a one-day high-level debate on international migration and development in lieu of the 2019 High-level Dialogue, under the auspices of the President of the General Assembly, to inform the high-level political forum on sustainable development which will review the Goals and targets relevant to migration of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, taking into consideration the outcomes of other processes related to international migration.<\/p>\n
Well ahead of the International Migration Review Forum, scheduled to take place in 2022, this high-level debate will seek to inform the 2019 high level political forum on sustainable development by \u201c advancing the discussion on the multidimensional aspects of international migration and development and assessing progress towards the achievement of the migration-related goals and targets. Considering that the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), is grounded in the 2030 Agenda, the high-level debate will also consider the interlinkages and synergies between the SDGs and the GCM, without prejudicing the negotiations concerning the modalities of the International Migration Review Fora, which will be concluded later this year.<\/p>\n

The High-Level Debate will provide an opportunity to share experiences and best practices, including how stakeholders at the national and local levels are implementing the SDGs, their successes, challenges and lessons learned. These experiences could also help provide relevant examples for implementation of the GCM.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”1_2″][et_pb_image _builder_version=”3.17.4″ src=”https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2019\/01\/ImageIOM1.png” \/][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″][et_pb_toggle admin_label=”Eligibility and Registration” _builder_version=”3.17.4″ title=”Eligibility and Registration”]<\/p>\n The following organizations are invited to participate:<\/p>\n (i)<\/strong> Representatives from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council;<\/p>\n (ii)<\/strong> Representatives from Non-Governmental Organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions, private sector entities, diaspora communities and migrant organizations that were accredited to the preparatory process<\/u> of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration or to the Intergovernmental Conference<\/u> to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.<\/p>\n Please note that pre-registration is required and does not guarantee entry into the meeting. Seating is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis on the day of the event. For each organization, a maximum of two (2) representatives can register.<\/p>\n Upon completing the pre-registration, you will receive an email notification that your pre-registration has been received. Once your pre-registration has been approved, you will receive a second confirmation email that you have been registered for the High-Level Debate on International Migration and Development which you can present to a US Consulate when applying for your US visa, if needed.<\/p>\n Please note that there is no funding available for stakeholder participation.
