Wrappers for our chocolate bars, packets for our crisps and plastic utensils for our lunch. But, this brief life cycle has consequences; every day, the equivalent of over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/plastic-pollution\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic<\/span><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are dumped into our oceans, rivers and lakes. As a result, plastic pollution is set to triple by 2060 if no action is taken. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To prevent this from happening, we need to drastically change our relationship with plastic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>We are producing too much plastic<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plastics are the largest, most harmful and most persistent fraction of marine litter, accounting for <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/interactives\/pollution-to-solution\/\">at least 85 per cent of total marine waste<\/a><\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plastic packaging is the reason for the majority <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/42437\/Plastic_Pollution_WED23EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<span style=\"color: #046b99\">36%<\/span>)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of plastic production. <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/42437\/Plastic_Pollution_WED23EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">46 per cent<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of plastic waste is landfilled, <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/42437\/Plastic_Pollution_WED23EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">22 per cent<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> becomes litter, <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/42437\/Plastic_Pollution_WED23EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">17 per cent<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is incinerated and <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/42437\/Plastic_Pollution_WED23EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">15 per cent<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is collected for recycling, with less than <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/42437\/Plastic_Pollution_WED23EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">9 per cent <\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actually recycled after losses.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This means that even if we are taking all the right steps, plastic is still coming back to haunt us.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Marine ecosystems and environments are under threat<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Plastics account for 85 per cent of marine litter. A plastic grocery bag has been found in the Mariana Trench &#8211; the deepest point in the ocean, and without urgent action, the estimated <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/interactives\/pollution-to-solution\/\">11 million metric tons<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of plastic currently entering the ocean annually will triple in the next twenty years.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And it\u2019s not just the water quality that plastic impacts. Plastic remnants have been found in digestive systems of many water species, <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/interactives\/pollution-to-solution\/\">including every marine turtle species and nearly half of all surveyed seabird and marine mammal species<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Tackling the planet&#8217;s\u00a0plastic problem<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-111120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-66x66.png 66w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-800x800.png 800w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-common-ocean-plastic-waste-en.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/>Currently, the plastic crisis has environmental, health, economic and social impacts &#8211; we need to redesign both the products which use plastic, how we use them in our daily lives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Concrete steps are being taken to address the global plastic problem. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/about-un-environment\/inc-plastic-pollution\">Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">\u00a0<\/span> convened to establish an international legally binding instrument focused on plastic pollution, particularly in marine environments. The second <\/span>Committee<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> met in Paris on May 29th to June 2nd, 2023 with an aim to finalize negotiations by the end of 2024. Their primary objective is to comprehensively tackle the entire life cycle of plastic, ensuring accountability from manufacturing to disposal. In parallel, the United Nations Environmental Programme has released a report titled &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/turning-off-tap-end-plastic-pollution-create-circular-economy\">Turning off the <\/a><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/turning-off-tap-end-plastic-pollution-create-circular-economy\">Tap<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">,<\/span>&#8221; proposing a systemic approach to combat plastic pollution. These combined efforts reflect significant progress in the battle against plastic pollution on a global scale.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The benefits of reducing plastic pollution aren\u2019t confined to one of the goals of the 2030 agenda.
