To advance access to on multilateralism, the Dag Hammarskj?ld Library recently completed a project focused on Member States¡¯ Permanent Representatives.
The Library team created a comprehensive dataset containing verified information about over 2,800 individuals who served as Permanent Representatives to the UN in New York. The data covers the years 1946 to 2025 and includes gender information as well as Member State affiliation.
This achievement reflects significant metadata remediation by the Library team. For instance, the term Permanent Representative was not consistently used until it was formalized in 1948 by , requiring additional research to identify which roles would have been considered equivalent in the early years.
Each name in the dataset was carefully reviewed to identify inconsistencies, such as variations in spelling or format over time. The data was compiled using authoritative sources, including and the , a collection of 317 volumes fully digitized by the Library.
This latest initiative underscores the Library¡¯s commitment to advancing the United Nations Research Commons and enhancing evidence-based decision-making and understanding of the Organization¡¯s work.
There are many applications for this dataset, which can easily be combined with . It directly supports data analysis on gender distribution, diversity, and mobility among high-profile UN positions, as well as regional representation.
