(Nairobi, 19 December, 2025). More than 11.3 million people have been displaced following the two-year conflict in Sudan’s Darfur Region.

This was revealed by the Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, Mr. Chaloka Beyani who was on mission to Kenya from 15-18 December to assess the situation in the Sudan.

Following his review, he addressed the press at Nairobi where he announced his urgent call for the cessation of hostilities between The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

For two and half years’ the two rivalries have been fighting in Sudan’s West Darfur Region.  This has set off the world’s most devastating humanitarian crisis, inflicting untold suffering for civilians. Sudan is now the largest hunger and displacement crisis on the planet.

According to the Under-Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, there are currently, 11.3 million internally displaced people in Darfur while 3.5 million Refugees from Darfur are reported to have dispersed in the Region while 70,000 people are still missing.

The USG has called for a victim cantered approach in order to address the cycle of violence and atrocities that have been committed in the past.

The Under-Secretary-General expressed that during his Mission, he met with Refugees in the Region who narrated their stories of trauma and urge for help with healing following the atrocities and extreme violence they had witnessed in Sudan.

Mr. Chaloka, the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide further called for the convening of a credible and inclusive peace process that would lead the multiple platforms that currently exist.  USG Chaloka believes the African Union can assist with leading that process.

While he was in the region, Mr. Chaloka informed more than 38 journalists whom he addressed, that he found time to listen to “the voices of the victims and to the civil society – they all demand accountability and the end of impunity for the atrocities committed.”

He emphasised that while The ICC was conducting ongoing investigations in Darfur,  its jurisdiction is limited and a broader accountability mechanism such as a tribunal, hybrid court, extraordinary chambers or the activation the criminal jurisdiction of the African Court of Justice would hammer the complicated ongoing crisis in Darfur.

To prevent mass atrocities, especially in Darfur and the Kordofan regions, The Under-Secretary-General Mr. Chaloka Beyani called for the demilitarization and demobilization of forces, and for Member States to stop supplying weapons to Sudan-an effort which aligns with the African Unions, Putting guns Down campaign.

UNIS Nairobi facilitated the Press Conference for the Under-Secretary-General Chaloka Beyani at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi.
