{"id":128913,"date":"2018-02-28T23:27:24","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T23:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=128913"},"modified":"2018-02-28T18:27:24","modified_gmt":"2018-02-28T23:27:24","slug":"human-rights-council-concludes-its-high-level-segment-excerpts","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/human-rights-council-concludes-its-high-level-segment-excerpts\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Rights Council Concludes its High-level Segment (excerpts)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pr_date\"><strong>Also Concludes its General Segment<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"pr_date\"><strong>28 February 2018<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>The Human Rights Council this morning concluded its high-level segment, hearing statements from 17 dignitaries, who presented efforts to promote and protect human rights, and spoke of the Council as the main global forum for discussing human rights challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Riad Malki, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine, reminded that 70 bleak years had passed by since the beginning of the plight of the Palestinian people, and 50 years since the occupation of Palestine by Israel.\u00a0 The international community should not just speak of the two-State solution without taking practical steps to defend it.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>IAD MALKI,\u00a0<u>Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine<\/u>, reminded that 70 bleak years had passed by since the beginning of the plight of the Palestinian people, and 50 years since the occupation of Palestine by Israel.\u00a0 The Palestinian people had endured the most heinous forms of Judaization and attempts to remove Arab characteristics of Jerusalem.\u00a0 Israel\u2019s colonial policies were directed at removing the identities of Arabs and Christians alike.\u00a0 All that was supported by the decision of the United States Administration to move its embassy to Jerusalem, in a clear violation of international agreements and of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.\u00a0 That decision contradicted several United Nations resolutions; it was null and void and it did not change the fact that Jerusalem was the capital of the Palestinian State.\u00a0 Israel was escalating its systematic schemes to persecute the Palestinian people, deport them and arbitrarily arrest them through the adoption of racist laws.\u00a0 Human rights and peace went hand in hand.\u00a0 The Palestinian people had been deprived of their fundamental rights and peace by the Israeli occupation regime for 70 years.\u00a0 It was high time for the international community to impose its vision of peace in Palestinian territory by confronting the Israeli colonial settlement system and prohibiting it.\u00a0 The international community should not just speak of the two-State solution without taking practical steps to defend it.\u00a0 It had to hold Israel accountable and ensure that it respected United Nations resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>MEHDI BEN GHARBIA,\u00a0<u>Minister for Relations with Constitutional Institutions and Civil Society and Human Rights of Tunisia<\/u>, said&#8230;Tunisians remained concerned over the situation in Palestine as Israel continued flouting international law.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>AHMET YILDIZ,\u00a0<u>Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkey<\/u>, said&#8230;The Government remained deeply concerned over the situation in occupied Palestine with recent unilateral Israeli action and continued settlement activities violating international law.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Oman<\/u>\u00a0highlighted that&#8230;The plight of Palestinian people remained unanswered.\u00a0 A two-State solution had to be implemented with East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian State.\u00a0 This was the only answer.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #333333\">For use of the information media;
