QUESTIONS CONSIDERED BY THE SECURITY COUNCIL AT ITS 838TH MEETING<\/p><\/div>\n

ON 7 AUGUST 1958<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Liberia, Norway, Panama, Paraguay: draft resolution<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The General Assembly<\/u>, <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Having considered<\/u> the item “Questions discussed at the 838th meeting of the Security Council on 7 August 1958”,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Noting<\/u> the declarations addressed to the President of the General Assembly of 18 August 1958 by the United States regarding United States forces now in Lebanon and their withdrawal and by the United Kingdom regarding British forces now in Jordan and their withdrawal,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Noting<\/u> the Charter aim that States should “practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors”,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

A.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>Reaffirms<\/u> that all Member States should “refrain from any threats or acts, direct or indirect, aimed at impairing the freedom, independence or integrity of any State, or at fomenting civil strife and subverting the will of the people of any State”;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Calls upon<\/u> all Member States strictly to observe these obligations and to ensure that their conduct, by word and deed, in relation to the general area of the Near East, conforms to the above-mentioned policy.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

B.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Requests<\/u> the Secretary-General, in accordance with the Charter, forthwith to make such practical arrangements as he, in consultation with the Governments concerned, may find would adequately serve to help in upholding the purposes and principles of the Charter in relation to Lebanon and Jordan in present circumstances, having in mind Section A of the present resolution.<\/p><\/div>\n

C.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>Notes<\/u> that the Secretary-General has studies in preparation of the consideration by the thirteenth session of the General Assembly of the feasibility of establishing a stand-by United Nations Peace Force;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Invites<\/u> the Secretary-General to continue his studies now under way and in this context to consult as appropriate with the Arab countries of the Near East with a view to possible assistance regarding an Arab development institution designed to further economic growth in these countries.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

D.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>Requests<\/u> Member States to co-operate fully in carrying out this resolution;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Invites<\/u> the Secretary-General to report hereunder, as appropriate, the first such report to be made not later than 30 September 1958.<\/p><\/div>\n
