DECISIONS ADOPTED BY THE COMMITTEE AT ITS FIFTEENTH AND SIXTEENTH SESSIONS<\/p><\/div>\n

A. Fifteenth session<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

1 ( XV ). Information supplied by the Syrian Arab Republic relating to the situation in the Golan Heights<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination<\/u>,<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Recalling<\/u> its decisions 4 <\/i>(IV) of 30 August 1971, (VII) of 25 April 1973 and 1 (X) of 22 August 1974,<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Having considered<\/u> the fourth periodic report of the Syrian Arab Republic,<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Noting<\/u> the reports and additional information laid before the Committee by the representative of that Government, to the effect that – as a result of the continued refusal to permit the return of the displaced population, the continued establishment of settlements, and other acts against the population of the area -the situation has not only persisted but substantially deteriorated,<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.  Expresses<\/u> once more its grave concern:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(a)\t<\/span>That a State party to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination has been prevented from fulfilling its obligations under this Convention in a part of its territory;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(b)\t<\/span>That this unacceptable state of affairs has lasted for close to 10 years;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Once again expresses<\/u> the hope that the population of the Golan Heights will be able as soon as possible to return to their homes and to enjoy fully their human rights and fundamental freedoms as citizens of the Syrian Arab Republic; <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>3.\t<\/span>Asks<\/u> the General Assembly of the United Nations to ensure that no change in the area which has the effect of establishing racial discrimination, including change in the demographic composition, is brought about;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/i>4.  <\/i>Asks<\/u> the General Assembly of the United Nations as a matter of urgency to take the necessary steps in order to enable the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to take over full responsibility for the implementation of its obligations under the Convention on its whole national territory.<\/p><\/div>\n

1 (XVI). Information supplied by the Government of Jordan relating to the situation in the Israeli-occupied West Bank of the Jordan River<\/u> <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Having considered<\/u> the second periodic report of Jordan,<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Noting<\/u> the information laid before the Committee by the representative of that Government concerning the continued refusal by the Israeli occupation authorities to permit the return of the displaced population, the continued establishment of settlements, and other acts against the population of the Israeli-occupied West Bank of the Jordan River,<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>Notes<\/u> that a State party to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination has informed the Committee that it has been prevented from fulfilling its obligations under this Convention in a part of its territory, and expresses its grave concern<\/u> at this unacceptable state of affairs;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Expresses the hope<\/u> that the displaced population of the West Bank of the Jordan River will be able as soon as possible to return to their homes and to enjoy fully their human rights and fundamental freedoms;<\/p><\/div>\n
