\t<\/span>I have the honour to bring to your attention the statement issued on 2 October 2000 by the Presidency of the European Union on behalf of the European Union on the situation in Jerusalem and in the Territories (see annex).<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I should be grateful if you would have the text of this letter and its annex circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 41, and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n

Statement by the Presidency of the European Union on behalf of the<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

European Union on the situation in Jerusalem and in the Territories<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The European Union is very concerned at the continued bloody clashes in Jerusalem and in the territories and is appalled by the number of victims.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>These events show to what extent provocative action in a tense situation can have tragic consequences.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The European Union calls on the leaders of both parties to take all necessary measures to ensure that the violence ceases and that new provocative action is avoided.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>It warns against the unjustified use of force.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>It invites the parties involved to concentrate afresh on the negotiated search for peace, which is more necessary than ever.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
