  Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement. <\/p><\/div>\n

  The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 5115th (private) meeting, held on 24 January 2005 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

  At the close of the meeting, in accordance with rule 55 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the following communiqué was issued through the Secretary-General in place of a verbatim record: <\/p><\/div>\n

  “On 24 January 2005, the Security Council, pursuant to annex II, sections A and B, of resolution 1353 (2001), held its 5115th meeting in private with the troop-contributing countries to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

  “The President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Mr. Hédi Annabi, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

  “The members of the Security Council and the troop-contributing countries to UNIFIL and UNTSO heard a briefing by Mr. Annabi. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

  “The members of the Council, representatives of participating troop-contributing countries and Mr. Annabi had a constructive exchange of views.”<\/p><\/div>\n

  The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 5117th meeting, held on 28 January 2005 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (S\/2005\/36). <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

  The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of Lebanon, at his request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

  The President drew attention to a draft resolution (S\/2005\/53) submitted by Denmark, France, Greece, Romania, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

  The Security Council proceeded to vote on draft resolution S\/2005\/53, and adopted it unanimously as resolution <\/span>1583 (2005)<\/a> (for the text, see S\/RES\/1583 (2005); to be issued in <\/span>Official Records of the Security Council, Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council, 1 August 2004-31 July 2005 <\/i><\/span>).<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
