\t<\/span>Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement. <\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 2858th meeting, held on 24 April 1989 in accordance with the understanding reached in the Council's prior consultations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The President stated that, following consultations among members of the Council, he had been authorized to make the following statement (<\/span>S\/20602<\/a><\/a>) on behalf of the Security Council:<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"The members of the Security Council, gravely concerned by the sufferings caused to the civilian population by the worsening situation in Lebanon, reaffirm their statement of 31 March, in which, in particular, they urged all parties to respond favourably to the appeals for an effective cease-fire.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"They reiterate their full support for the action of the Ministerial Committee of the League of Arab States led by H.E. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, in order to put an end to the loss of human lives, to alleviate the sufferings of the Lebanese people and to achieve an effective cease-fire indispensable for a settlement of the Lebanese crisis.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"They invite the Secretary-General, in collaboration with the Ministerial Committee of the League of Arab States, to make all possible efforts and to make all contacts which could be deemed useful for these same purposes."\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
