AT ITS 838TH MEETING ON 7 AUGUST 1958<\/p><\/div>\n

Report of the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

1.\t<\/span>Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 1237 (ES-III) of 21 August 1958, part 4, paragraph 2, the Secretary-General has the honour to submit letters regarding the withdrawal of troops from Lebanon and Jordan received from the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (see Annexes 1 and 2 to the present document).  As stated in those letters, the withdrawal of United States troops from Lebanon was completed on 25 October and the withdrawal of United Kingdom troops from Jordan on 2 November 1958.  <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

2.\t<\/span>Steps have recently been taken looking towards a normalization of air and overland transport in relation to Jordan.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

3.\t<\/span>The development of the special arrangements in relation to Jordan made under the above-mentioned resolution will be the subject of a later report.<\/p><\/div>\n

LETTER DATED 6 NOVEMBER 1958 FROM THE REPRESENTATIVE<\/p><\/div>\n

ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

New York, 6 November 1958<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>I have the honour to inform you that on 27 September the United States Government made known its intention to complete the withdrawal of United States troops from Lebanon by the end of October, if possible, provided the international security situation with respect to Lebanon continued to improve in the framework of successful implementation of part I of the General Assembly resolution of 21 August 1958.  There has been continued improvement.  The United States Government has therefore been able to complete the withdrawal of its troops.  The last United States troops left Lebanon on 25 October, ahead of schedule.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>The United States wishes to express its appreciation for the untiring efforts of the Secretary-General which have contributed to the establishment of conditions making possible the withdrawal of United States forces.<\/p><\/div>\n

TO THE UNITED NATIONS, ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>New York, 6 November 1958<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>In my letter of 1 October (A\/3937) I informed you that Her Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom had agreed with the Government of Jordan that the withdrawal of British troops would begin on 20 October and that it would be completed within a period not exceeding such time as might be required for the necessary arrangements for the movement of personnel, stores and equipment.  In reaching this decision Her Majesty’s Government took into account among other factors the assurances received by you from other Arab Governments concerned that they intended to conduct their relations with Jordan in accordance with the General Assembly’s resolution of 21 August.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I now have the honour to inform you that the withdrawal of United Kingdom forces from Jordan was completed on 2 November.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I take this opportunity of conveying to you the appreciation of Her Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom for the contribution which you have made towards giving effect to the purposes of the resolution of 21 August.<\/p><\/div>\n
