Identical letters dated 26 February 2013 from the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council<\/strong> <\/p><\/div>\n

 After only three months of relative quiet, the citizens of Israel awoke again this morning to discover the horrific reality of terrorism from Gaza. <\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

 Earlier today, a rocket was fired at the Israeli city of Ashkelon. This is the first rocket that has been launched from Gaza since the conclusion of Operation Pillar of Defense in November 2012. The fragile calm that has prevailed over the past three months has been shattered.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

 This attack is an unacceptable breach of the ceasefire that ended our campaign against Hamas last year. Israel holds Hamas fully responsible for any attack that emanates from areas under its control. No country would sit idle as a terrorist organization played Russian roulette with the lives of its citizens.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

 The Security Council has a responsibility to help maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza. I therefore urge the Council to condemn this violation of the ceasefire before the situation further escalates. <\/p><\/div>\n
