Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian Authority President.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Dr Solana expressed his pleasure to receive Mr Abbas at the Council of the European Union. The European Union has been supporting the Palestinians for the last ten years and will continue to do so in the future. The way the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people have handled the complicated situation over the last months with the election of a new president has been met with great respect by the European Union and the whole international community. The European Union wants to help the Palestinian people to achieve their ultimate goal of independence and sovereignty through the implementation of the Road Map. The period from now until summer will be crucial especially when it comes to three dimensions: the electoral process, economic progress and security. In all three dimensions the Palestinian people can count on the EU.<\/p><\/div>\n
