H.E. the Minister of Local Government and the Special Representative of UNDP\/PAPP sign the Third Annual Work Programme for the Local Rural Development Programme funded by the European Commission.<\/strong> <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Jerusalem, 22 August 2002 –<\/strong> The Minister of Local Government, Dr. Sa'eb Erekat and Mr. Timothy Rothermel, Special Representative of the United Nations Development Programme\/Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP\/PAPP), signed the third annual work plan for the Local Rural Development Programme (LRDP) funded by the European Commission. <\/p><\/div>\n

This work programme includes the construction of new schools, roads, developing water and electricity networks and building community centers in the districts of Tubas, Tulkarem, the Jordan Valley and Gaza. The LRDP will continue to assist the Ministry of Local Government (MLG) in its efforts towards decentralization and building the capacities of the local authorities by the establishment of four new micro region planning committees and training local managers in development planning and project management. The total value of the work programme is €4.6 million, for which the European Commission is generously providing €3.9 million. <\/p><\/div>\n

"The LRDP is working cooperatively with the MLG to support the PA in its decentralization policy. The excellent contribution from the EC enables these communities to select, design and implement their own priority projects; at the same time it affords them the opportunity to assume responsibility for improving infrastructure and services", said Mr. Rothermel, UNDP\/PAPP Special Representative. "We are delighted that the LRDP, which is one of our flagship projects, is moving into its third phase, with commendable success." <\/p><\/div>\n

The LRDP is currently completing work in 125 projects in six other micro regions throughout the West Bank and Gaza with funding from the European Commission. <\/p><\/div>\n
