On August 7 the Israeli authorities detained Palestinian Parliament speaker Abdel Aziz Duaik. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The arrest of the lawfully elected head of the Palestinian Legislative Council, just as of any other official of the Palestinian National Authority, raises quite a few questions, in particular, with regard to the legality of Israel's arresting and trying members of the Palestinian legislative and executive authorities on territories that are not under Israel's jurisdiction. Such actions far from contribute to the defusing of the situation on the Palestinian territories or to the resumption of progress towards a Palestinian-Israeli settlement on an internationally recognized basis.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

We hope that the Palestinian officials will be released shortly.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
