UNDP continues to support school children<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

with special needs<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Gaza, November 19, 2009 – The United Nations Development Programme signed memorandums of understanding with six local NGO’s in the Gaza Strip worth US$117,250 in response to the basic needs of children especially those of families living under extreme poverty.  The ceremony was attended by Mr. Amjad Shawa the head of the Palestinian Non-governmental Organization Network representing the six NGOs, and Mr. Balma Yahaya Head of UNDP\/PAPP Gaza Office.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The project, funded by the UNDP Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery and the United Arab Emirates, will be implemented over a period of six months, targeting 2000 school children with low school achievement levels due to learning difficulties. This comes as a follow up to the initiative created last year in supporting 3000 school children.<\/p><\/div>\n

“In spite of the financial hardships, education remains key in the Palestinian society, therefore we have to keep supporting them”, said Said Abu Ghazza, UNDP project Manager.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Through the project, supplementary classes will be provided for English, Arabic, science and math, in addition to participatory learning techniques, entertainment and psychosocial support.  The project is expected to strengthen the local capacity in the educational sector and create employment for 30 young people who will be offering their support for the children.<\/p><\/div>\n

“Today is also the World Child day and we are proud to sign these agreements with UNDP on this occasion for the children of Gaza”. Mr. Shawa said.<\/p><\/div>\n
