9 July 2008 – The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) today concluded a series of discussions in Cairo, Egypt, and Amman, Jordan, following earlier talks with President Mahmoud Abbas and senior Israeli officials. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In his travels, Robert Serry discussed all facets of the Middle East peace process, expressing the UN’s support for Egyptian efforts to consolidate calm in Gaza and enhance conditions for civilians, UN spokesperson Michele Montas told journalists. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

He also underscored the Secretary-General’s backing of the continuing Israeli-Palestinian political negotiations, steps taken by President Abbas’ to boost Palestinian unity and the indirect talks between Israel and Syria, she added. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

UNSCO<\/strong><\/a> was established in 1994 following the signing of the Oslo Accord, and since 2002, the Special Coordinator has been the Secretary-General’s envoy in the Middle East Quartet, comprising the UN, the United States, the European Union and Russia. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
