Secretary-General and Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Kieran Prendergast attended the Security Council&#8217;s closed consultations on Lebanon, to discuss the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/Docs\/journal\/asp\/ws.asp?m=S\/2005\/203\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><u>report<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;of the Mission of Inquiry into the circumstances, causes and consequences of the February 14 bombing in Beirut. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">That report is out on the racks today, as is a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/Docs\/journal\/asp\/ws.asp?m=S\/2005\/209\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><u>letter<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;from the Syrian Government responding to it. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<li style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">The mission, headed by Peter Fitzgerald, says in the report that, to uncover the truth behind the bombing, which killed former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, it would be necessary to entrust the investigation to an international independent commission. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">Asked whether the United Nations would send peacekeepers to replace Syrian troops withdrawing from Lebanon, the Spokesman said that the Security Council has not to his knowledge considered sending UN peacekeepers to Lebanon besides the existing UN <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/Depts\/dpko\/missions\/unifil\/\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><u>Interim Force<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;in southern Lebanon. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">Asked whether Syria is complying with UN <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/Docs\/journal\/asp\/ws.asp?m=S\/RES\/1559%20(2004)\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><u>resolution 1559<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">, the Spokesman said the Secretary-General would report on that to the Security Council by the end of
