Middle East, Afghanistan on agenda as Ban heads to Italy<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

25 June 2009 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon departs later today for Trieste, Italy, for a series of meetings with international partners focusing on the Middle East and Afghanistan, his spokesperson said today. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

On Friday, Mr. Ban will attend a meeting of the Middle East Quartet, which comprises the UN, European Union, Russia and the United States. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Also in Trieste on Friday, the Secretary-General will meet with members of the League of Arab States’ follow-up committee on the Arab Peace Initiative, the Saudi plan for full Arab peace with Israel in return for full withdrawal from territory it seized in 1967. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In addition, he will attend a meeting of the Group of Eight (G8) Foreign Ministers on Afghanistan. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“That gathering will look at the situation in Afghanistan from a regional perspective.
