  {"id":202429,"date":"2013-08-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=202429"},"modified":"2019-03-12T18:22:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:22:05","slug":"auto-insert-202429","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-202429\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli-Palestinian talks, Egypt and Syria on agenda as UN chief arrives in Middle East &#8211; UN news item"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\"><strong>sraeli-Palestinian talks, Egypt and Syria on agenda as UN chief arrives in Middle East<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">15 August 2013 &#8211; The deadly violence in Egypt, the ongoing Syria crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process were on Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon&#8217;s agenda as he arrived today in the Middle East, where he held talks with leaders in Jordan as well as with Palestinian officials in Ramallah, before heading to Israel. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">In Jordan, Mr. Ban expressed his gratitude to the Government and people of the country for their generosity in hosting over half a million Syrian refugees at a time when its ability to absorb more people was overstretched. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">Both the Secretary-General and King Abdullah recognized that it was critical for the international community to share the burden that Jordan is carrying, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/pdfs\/5372BD3A3FDF6D4A85257BC8004A4FAD.pdf\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">read-out<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">of their meeting in the Red Sea resort of Aqaba. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">They also discussed yesterday&#8217;s violence in Egypt, with Mr. Ban noting the need to move forward with a political process and genuine reconciliation in the country. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">The efforts by United States Secretary of State John Kerry to resume negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians were also discussed in their meeting, as well as in Mr. Ban&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/pdfs\/9210DE7FBA63853085257BC8004A9E34.pdf\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">meeting<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">with Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh. The Secretary-General commended Jordan&#8217;s efforts in recent years to get the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue back on track. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Mr. Ban then travelled to Ramallah in the West Bank, where he held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other Palestinian leaders. While there he also took part in a Model UN event, with a video link to Gaza. He will attend a similar Israeli event on Friday. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Before leaving Ramallah, the Secretary-General launched a new UN Development Assistance Framework that outlines how the world body works with the Palestinian Authority.
