A decision yesterday by the Palestinian Authority to apply for membership to 15 agencies and international treaties was given the unwavering support of the European United Left\/Nordic Green Left group in the European Parliament.<\/p><\/div>\n

Speaking on behalf of the group, GUE\/NGL Vice-President Patrick Le Hyaric <\/strong>said:  "The GUE\/NGL group supports the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people to be part of the international conventions and treaties that the status of UN observers confers on them. Rules of international law concerning the protection of people in the event of armed conflict and occupation must be respected everywhere, including in Palestine."<\/p><\/div>\n

He continued: "Palestinians have the right to enforce the four Geneva Conventions, complain and initiate proceedings regarding violations of human rights and the expansion of settlements, and also refer cases to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for serious violations of international law and in particular the continued occupation of Palestinian land taken by Israel during the 1967 war, as well as the detention conditions of Palestinian prisoners. The international community and the European Union cannot continue to turn a blind eye when it comes to the rights of the Palestinian people! "<\/p><\/div>\n

Patrick Le Hyaric<\/strong>, vice-président du groupe GUE\/NGL, a déclaré, au nom du groupe de la Gauche unitaire européenne – Gauche verte nordique du Parlement européen,  son soutien sans faille à la décision prise, le 1er avril, par l'Autorité palestinienne de demander son adhésion à quinze agences et traités internationaux.<\/p><\/div>\n

"Le groupe de la GUE\/GVN soutient les demandes légitimes du peuple palestinien de faire partie des conventions et traités  internationaux que le statut d'observateurs de l'ONU leur permet. Les règles du droit international concernant la  protection des personnes en cas de conflit armé et d'occupation doivent être respectées partout, et aussi en Palestine. Les Palestiniens ont le droit de pouvoir faire appliquer les quatre conventions de Genève, déposer plainte et engager des procès pour violations des droits de l'homme et les activités de colonisation, et, aussi, de saisir la Cour pénale internationale (CPI) concernant les graves violations du droit international et, notamment, au sujet de la poursuite de l'occupation des terres palestiniennes saisies par Israël pendant la guerre de 1967 et de la situation de rétention des prisonniers palestiniens. La communauté internationale, et l'Union européenne en tant que telle, ne peut pas continuer à regarder ailleurs quand il s'agit des droits du peuple palestinien!" a-t-il déclaré.<\/p><\/div>\n
