5 January 2006 – <\/i><\/span>Deeply concerned about the health of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today <\/span>wished<\/u><\/a> the leader a quick recovery. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In a <\/span>statement<\/a> <\/span>released through his spokesman, Mr. Annan said “he is following developments closely and very much hopes that the Prime Minister will make a speedy recovery.” <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Secretary-General’s “thoughts are with Mr. Sharon and his family, as well as with the Government and people of Israel,” the spokesman added. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Responding to press questions, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the Secretary-General had been in touch with Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Dan Gillerman, on the issue. <\/p><\/div>\n

Mr. Annan also discussed Mr. Sharon’s health and the situation in the Middle East with United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday evening, the spokesman said. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
