Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments with regard to the decision taken today by the Palestinian groups in Cairo to extend the current period of calm.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

"I wish to renew my support to the commitment of the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, to put an end to all forms of violence as the only way to advance the peace process. National reconciliation is an important element in stabilising the situation.<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

All Palestinians must make the choice of achieving their political goals by legitimate political means and through negotiations. The agreement reached today in Cairo constitutes a very encouraging step in this direction. The Egyptian government deserves support and congratulations on their efforts to facilitate this agreement. It is my sincere hope that this positive trend be sustained and consolidated, in the framework of a larger process towards stabilisation and the implementation of the Sharm el-Sheikh understandings, through a definitive renunciation to violence by all Palestinian groups."<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n
