  {"id":316961,"date":"2026-04-15T12:23:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T16:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=316961"},"modified":"2026-04-17T12:31:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T16:31:13","slug":"japan-and-undp-15apr26","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/japan-and-undp-15apr26\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan and UNDP scale up debris and waste management in Gaza with fresh contribution of USD 9.1 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>15 April 2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gaza Strip<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013The Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme \/ Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP\/PAPP),\u00a0jointly announce the\u00a0launch of\u00a0a fresh\u00a0USD 9.1\u00a0million project\u00a0for 2026\u20132027 in support of emergency debris and solid waste management in the Gaza Strip,\u00a0to scale up the\u00a0previous\u00a0efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025\u20132026 project,\u00a0which successfully concluded earlier this year,\u00a0resulted in\u00a0the collection of 112,000 tons of debris. Debris clearance has enhanced humanitarian access and sustainable livelihoods through road maintenance and shelter-foundation strengthening from recycled materials. Moreover, the project enabled the procurement and daily operational use of three trucks for solid waste management.<\/p>\n<p>However, with heightening needs for economic activities through municipal road rehabilitation and the recent upsurge of waste piles that gravely affect the public health of citizens and marketplaces, Japan decided to make available larger funds for quick response that encompass early recovery of livelihoods in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>This new project will further expand debris removal\u00a0operations\u00a0and improve\u00a0Gazans\u2019\u00a0access to basic services. The removal and recycling of debris\u00a0is expected to\u00a0facilitate the daily activities of\u00a0over one million Palestinians,\u00a0including women accessing markets,\u00a0and restoration of waste collection and disposal systems will support primary solid waste collection for more than 695,000 people across the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>With this\u00a0upcoming\u00a0project,\u00a0local\u00a0Joint Services Councils\u00a0will be empowered to sustain its operation of\u00a0daily waste collection\u00a0and management of\u00a0rehabilitated temporary dumping sites,\u00a0through newly acquired\u00a0equipment, fuel, and\u00a0short-term job opportunities\u00a0of fuel monitors, controllers, and supervisors,\u00a0that add up to\u00a036,000 working days and six months of income\u00a0in\u00a0support of 200 families.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. ARAIKE Katsuhiko, Ambassador for\u00a0the\u00a0Palestinian Affairs, states: \u201cJapan has long been a flagbearer of the Humanitarian\u2013Development\u2013Peace nexus, and continues to advocate that early recover challenges must be addressed even as humanitarian crises are unfolding. Japan sees great potential of its partnership with UNDP and wishes to unlock opportunities for a more vibrant socio-economic life for many Gazans hoping for a better tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jaco Cilliers, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator, says: \u201cUNDP is pleased to continue its steadfast partnership with Japan to support the Palestinian people in Gaza.
