Peacekeeping mission
The UN Security Council, by of 27 June 2011, responded to the urgent situation in Sudan’s Abyei region by establishing the . The operation has been tasked with monitoring the flashpoint border between north and south and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, and is authorized to use force in protecting civilians and humanitarian workers in Abyei. UNISFA’s establishment came after the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) reached an agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to demilitarize Abyei and let Ethiopian troops to monitor the area.
In accordance with United Nations Security Council resolution 2715, closed on 29 February 2024.

Special Envoy for the Great Lakes
In its Resolution 2098 (2013), the Security Council welcomed the signing of the PSC Framework. It called on the Special Envoy, in coordination with the Special Representative for the DRC to “lead, coordinate and assess the implementation of national and regional commitments under the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework, including through the establishment of benchmarks and appropriate follow-up measures”.
The Security Council further encouraged the Special Envoy to “lead a comprehensive political process that includes all relevant stakeholders to address the underlying root causes of the conflict”.
