Enhancing Situational Awareness Capacity of the United Nations Police and its Responses to Cyber Risks in Peace Operations
Synopsis
Objectives
The project aims to enhance the technical capacity and interoperability of United Nations Police (UNPOL) to more effectively address criminal threats such as serious and organized crime, corruption, and violent extremism, that undermine peace and security in mission areas.
Components
The project supports selected peace operations by conducting assessments on existing crime information management systems before and during the roll-out of the UNPOL crime data module within the Unite Aware platform. It assists selected missions in identifying business solution requirements, develops a dedicated module for UNPOL data visualization and analysis, creates training curricula, and organizes a pilot capacity-building workshop on crime information management.
Main achievements
The project has focused primarily on preparatory and coordination activities essential for successful implementation. Progress has been made in planning and stakeholder engagement. Coordination meetings have been held with key partners, including OICT, the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC), and the Peacekeeping-Intelligence Coordination Team, to align technical requirements and define operational modalities. A comprehensive desk review has been initiated to analyse current crime information management processes, with particular focus on MINUSCA as one of the pilot missions. Discussions and consultations were conducted with MINUSCA’s Police Component, specifically the Crime Analysis Section, to map existing systems and identify business needs. Planning is underway for the first joint assessment mission to MINUSCA, scheduled for September 2025, which will include experts from the Police Division, OICT, UNOCC, and other partners.
Impact
This project enhances responsiveness to threats like organized crime, terrorism, and violent extremism by enabling missions to proactively address security challenges through accurate, unified crime trend analysis.
