Flower of Srebrenica
A Permanent Memorial at United Nations Headquarters to Honour the Victims of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica
The Flower of Srebrenica memorial is based on the symbol of remembrance of the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica – the Srebrenica Flower.
The Srebrenica Flower comprises rows of 11 white petals made of white Thassos marble, around a centre made of Verde Marin green marble. The 11 petals represent 11 July, the date designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. The white colour of the petals represents the innocence of the victims and the green of the centre represents hope for the future.
In 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina gifted the Flower of Srebrenica Memorial to the Secretariat of the United Nations as part of the Srebrenica Genocide and the United Nations Outreach Programme. The Permanent Memorial forms an integral part of the Srebrenica Genocide and the United Nations Outreach Programme, engaging visitors in reflection and commemoration.
The Flower of Srebrenica Memorial reflects the United Nations’ commitment to honour the victims and survivors of the Srebrenica genocide. The Memorial is a testament to the survivors’ fight for justice and accountability. It stands as a response to denial and distortion of this historic atrocity and upholds the memory and dignity of those impacted. It stands as a permanent reminder of the obligation to prevent genocide.
