29 July 2025 - PBC Ambassadorial-level Meeting on SSTC

On 29 July, the Peacebuilding Commission convened an Ambassadorial-level meeting on the role of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) for building and sustaining peace. Briefers included the Minister of Planning and Economic Development of Sierra Leone, who is also Chair of the g7+, the Director-General of Colombia's Presidential Agency for International Cooperation, the President of Portugal's overseas language and culture institute (Cam?es Institute), and a civil society peacebuilder from South Sudan. The Acting Administrator of UNDP delivered opening remarks. The meeting highlighted good practices, such as Colombia’s South-South Cooperation Programme for Peacebuilding and the g7+'s model of Fragile-to-Fragile Cooperation. Member States underscored the benefits of peer-to-peer learning and called for sustained investment in SSTC as a key modality for the advancement of nationally owned peacebuilding efforts.

23 July 2025 - PBC Expert-level Meeting on YPS - PBF Thematic Review

On 23 July, ahead of International Youth Day on 12 August, the Peacebuilding Commission held an expert-level meeting focused on strengthening youth participation in peacebuilding. Member States were briefed on the Peacebuilding Fund’s study on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) programming and the Independent Progress Study on youth contributions to peace processes. A youth briefer shared first-hand experiences and challenges faced by young peacebuilders. Discussions emphasized the need for a holistic approach to inclusion, particularly for minority groups and persons with disabilities, and for placing youth at the center of peacebuilding efforts.

16 July 2025 - PBC experts engage with the Asia Development Bank

On July 16, the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) convened an expert-level meeting with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to explore its approach to Fragile and Conflict-Affected Situations (FCAS) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), aligned with ADB’s Strategy 2030. Mr. Samuel Tumiwa, ADB’s representative for North America, provided a briefing to PBC members and representatives from the Asia-Pacific Group, outlining ADB’s tailored strategy for addressing fragility. He highlighted opportunities for context-specific support, operational flexibility, and concessional financing under the $5 billion Asian Development Fund (ADF14). Member States learned how ADB incorporates peacebuilding, the role of the private sector, project planning to enhance local resilience including against climate related shocks and strategies to ensure sustainable and accessible financing for SIDS.

11 July 2025 - PBC Expert-level meeting on UN-CSO Dialogue

On 11 July, DPPA's Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) and the CMI–Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation briefed PBC members on the Civil Society Organization–UN Dialogue and its role in connecting Member States and civil society on peacebuilding issues. The meeting also outlined plans for the next annual Dialogue, scheduled for December, and gathered Member State expectations for the event. Launched in 2023 by PBSO with civil society and UN partners, the Dialogue on Peacebuilding Initiative offers a platform—especially for Global South actors—to shape peacebuilding policies and enhance civil society engagement in line with the UN’s commitments under the Pact for the Future.

9 July 2025 - PBC Expert-level on Investment for Peace: The role of Medium and Small Enterprises in Peacebuilding

On 9 July, the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) held an expert-level meeting to explore how the local private sector works as peace agents in peacebuilding. Representatives from the African Development Bank, the Somali Development Bank, Investisseurs et Partenaires, and Shurako Capital shared their insights with the PBC on how local private investments can support peacebuilding initiatives. They emphasized that their investments address critical gaps left as a result of diminishing Official Development Assistance (ODA), as they often operate where government services are limited. By creating employment opportunities, promoting economic development, increasing tax revenues, and discouraging a return to conflict, local private investments play a vital role in peacebuilding due to their resilience.

19 June 2025 - PBC Annual Session highlights peacebuilding successes on 20th anniversary of UN Peacebuilding Architecture

On 19 June, the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) held its Annual Session, titled ‘Lessons from Peacebuilding Success Stories," commemorating the 20th anniversary of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture. The meeting was chaired by Serap Güler, Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia, delivered the keynote address via pre-recorded message. Foreign Ministers of The Gambia and Timor-Leste, along with a Youth Representative from The Gambia, shared their national experiences and recommendations. On behalf of the Secretary-General, USG DiCarlo as well as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support Elizabeth Spehar underscored the UN's commitment to supporting Member States in their peacebuilding efforts. Member States highlighted national experiences in inclusive governance, transitional justice, institutional resilience, regional cooperation, and South-South and Triangular Cooperation

11 June 2025 - Peacebuilding Commission and ECOSOC hold Joint Annual Meeting

On 11 June, the ECOSOC and PBC held their joint annual meeting, focused?on building and sustaining peace in Haiti. Briefers included a Municipal Commissioner of the Haitian National Police, on behalf of the Government, a civil society representative, the Country Director for Haiti at the Inter-American Development Bank, and the SRSG and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti. Member States deplored the severity of the crisis, underscored the need for comprehensive approaches rooted in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, stressed the importance of inclusive community violence reduction measures, called for the reinforcement of the Multinational Security Support Mission, urged enforcement of the sanctions regime and arms embargo,?and encouraged the ECOSOC and the PBC to remain?seized of the situation in Haiti.

4 June 2025 - PBC Expert-level meeting on Guyana's signature event

On 4 June, in advance of a Security Council Open Debate on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Poverty, underdevelopment and conflict: Implications for the maintenance of international peace and security”, that was to be hosted by the Guyanese Presidency, the PBC convened an expert-level meeting with a view to informing advice to the Council. Briefers included the Political Coordinator from the Permanent Mission of Guyana, the Chief of Peacebuilding Partnership Branch, the Director of the Institute for Economics and Peace, Latin America, and the Vice-President,?Food for the Hungry and Non-Resident Fellow, Center on International Cooperation (CIC) at the New York University.?Briefers and participants discussed the importance of considering the long-term sustainability of potential actions and not just focusing on stability in the near-term.

29 May 2025 - PBC Ambassadorial-level meeting on Sao Tome and Principe

On 29 May, the PBC convened an Ambassadorial-level meeting to hear a presentation from Mr. Carlos Vila Nova, President of S?o Tomé and Príncipe, on the Government’s newly adopted Conflict Prevention Strategy. The Strategy was developed with close support from the UN System, including from the Resident Coordinator, the PBC and the Peacebuilding Fund. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa, a Mr. Pietro Toigo, Country Manager at the African Development Bank, and?Ms. Quina Bragan?a, President of the Women Lawyers’ Organization,?also briefed. ?Member States welcomed the President’s participation and his presentation of Sao Tome and Principe’s Conflict Prevention Strategy, commended ongoing efforts to achieve reforms to its justice and security sectors, reaffirmed the importance of the meaningful inclusion of women and youth in peacebuilding, called for adequate resourcing to help Sao Tome and Principe implement its Conflict Prevention Strategy, and suggested that the PBC take stock of progress at a later date.??

28 May 2025 - PBC Country Specific Configuration Ambassadorial-level meeting on Liberia

On 28 May, the PBC Liberia Configuration convened an Ambassadorial level meeting to consider Liberia's peacebuilding priorities, with a focus on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. Briefings were delivered by Ms. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Gbeme Horace Kollie, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, as well as by Ms. Esther Yango, Executive Director of the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL), Ms. Sarah Hendriks, Director of the Policy, Programme and Intergovernmental Division at UN Women, and Ms. Christine Umutoni, UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia. Member States applauded Liberia for its successful journey from conflict to peace and democratic stability, commended its commitment to the WPS agenda, including the Government’s commitment to extend the second National Action Plan (NAP) on WPS and to develop a third NAP, called for the full, equal, meaningful and safe inclusion of women in decision-making. They also welcomed Liberia’s newly adopted national development plan, expressed support for its efforts to develop its first NAP on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS), encouraged further efforts to provide transitional justice, and called for sustained political, technical, financial, and in-kind support for Liberia’s peacebuilding priorities.?

23 May 2025 - PBC Expert-level meeting on Working Methods

On 23 May, PBSO supported the PBC Chair in holding an interactive, expert-level PBC discussion about the Commission’s working methods. The membership concentrated on identifying actions to enhance the PBC's activity and exploring how PBSO could offer more targeted and effective support in light of the ongoing UN80 and PBAR processes. The engagement also provided a valuable opportunity for the PBC membership to reflect on both the opportunities and challenges in promoting peacebuilding and advancing the PBC's work. ??

16 May 2025 - PBC Expert-level meeting with the World Bank

On 16 May, a PBC expert-level meeting was held on the World Bank’s Fragility, Conflict and Violence (FCV) strategy for 2020-2025. The World Bank’s Lead Partnerships Specialist provided an overview of the Bank's new FCV Strategy, FCV engagement on prevention and transition efforts, and the UN-World Bank partnership. There was strong emphasis on FCV with the backdrop that, by 2040, 75% of the world’s lowest income people will be living in FCV settings. The World Bank currently has 39 countries on its fragility list, including those experiencing active conflict and those facing climate insecurity. Member States also discussed national prevention strategies and how the PBC can actively contribute to inform the World Bank’s FCV strategy.????

14 May 2025 - PBC Expert-level meeting on South-South and Triangular Cooperation for building and sustaining peace

On 14 May, the PBC convened an expert-level meeting on SSTC for building and sustaining. Furthermore, the meeting served as a platform for Member States to emphasize SSTC’s alignment with peacebuilding principles (ownership, inclusion, non-interference), showcase their efforts, and demonstrate the value of SSTC in peacebuilding. The Director of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation provided examples of SSTC in peacebuilding including initiatives in Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Haiti, and Palestine. Other briefers included the Deputy Director of the Colombian Presidential Agency for International Development, and the Coordinator of the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding. ?The meeting moreover served to discuss PBC Chair’s remarks that were to be delivered at the 22nd session of the General Assembly’s High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation. ? ?

1-2 May 2025 - Ambassadorial Retreat explores opportunities to strengthen UN Peacebuilding Architecture

The Dag Hammarskj?ld Foundation (DHF), in partnership with DPPA’s Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), hosted an Informal retreat for Ambassadorial-level members of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) and of the Security Council at Greentree Estate in Manhasset, New York. The retreat focused on how the 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review can strengthen the work of the UN in peacebuilding including the Peacebuilding Commission’s advisory, convening and bridging roles.

30 April 2025 - PBC Expert-level meeting on the Central African Republic

On 30 April, the PBC convened an expert-level meeting of the Central African Republic Configuration, in advance of a Security Council briefing. Briefers included the Chief of the Financing for Peacebuilding Branch, the Permanent Mission of Morocco (Chair of the Central African Republic Configuration), the Director of Section for UN Policy, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and remarks from the CAR mission. The meeting served to debrief on the recent PBF high-level donors’ visit and to discuss a that the PBC was slated to provide to the Security Council.?

23 April 2025 - PBC Ambassadorial-level meeting on Colombia

On 23 April, the Peacebuilding Commission held an Ambassadorial-level meeting on Colombia’s ongoing peacebuilding efforts and the implementation of the 2016 Final Peace Agreement. The Commission heard briefings from H.E. Ms. Laura Sarabia, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia; Mr. Diego Tovar, representative of the High Contracting Party of the Agreement on behalf of the former FARC-EP and delegate to the Commission for the Follow-Up, Promotion and Verification of the Implementation of the Final Agreement; and Mr. Rodrigo Uprimny, founder and researcher at Dejusticia, former deputy justice of the Constitutional Court, and member of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (2015–2022). The discussion highlighted key achievements, acknowledged remaining challenges, and underscored the importance of sustained international engagement. The meeting additionally provided an opportunity to reflect on the role of South-South Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) in building and sustaining peace, and ways in which the UN System, including the PBC, can help advance peacebuilding efforts. Member States commended Colombia’s inclusive approach, welcomed its progress, and reaffirmed their support. Broad support was also expressed for the Peacebuilding Fund and the Colombia Multi-Partner Trust Fund as important instruments for advancing peacebuilding.?

15 April 2025 - PBC Expert-level meeting on Impact

On 15 April, the Peacebuilding Commission held an expert-level meeting focused on peacebuilding impact. The session featured briefings by the Peacebuilding Impact Hub, the Peacebuilding Fund, and the International Civil Society Action Network. It centered on the Hub’s priorities, informed by the needs of member states, and explored expectations, resource prioritization, and recommendations for its future work, with emphasis on data, communications, and support for local actors. The session additionally featured practical examples of impact and provided a platform for delegations to exchange views on the same.?

18 March 2025 - Expert-level meeting with Women Civil Society Groups

On 18 March, the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) convened an expert-level meeting with women civil society groups on the margins of CSW69. The meeting featured briefings from Paivi Kannisto, the Chief of the Peace, Security, Humanitarian and DRR Section of UN Women, Olivia Baro, representing the Pacific Conference of Churches, Jasmin Nario-Galace, representing the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP), France Bognon, representing the International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN), and Jackline Nasiwa, the Executive Director of the Centre for Inclusive Governance, Peace and Justice (CIGPJ) based in South Sudan. Member States welcomed the opportunity to engage with women peacebuilders and echoed their calls for developing innovative sources of financing to support women-led peacebuilding initiatives and empowering women to participate meaningfully in peace processes. During the exchange, they also posed various questions to the civil society representatives on such topics as ways of maximizing localized peacebuilding initiatives, how best to showcase the impact of civil society’s work in various contexts, and their experiences engaging with host governments and the UN system. The exchange will inform the Commission’s ongoing discussions on issues related to Women, Peace, and Security in a year marked by the anniversaries of the Beijing Conference and SCR 1325 and by the 2025 Review of the UN’s Peacebuilding Architecture.??

12 March 2025 - Ambassadorial-level first Annual Strategic Dialogue on the PBF

On 12 March, the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) held its first interactive strategic dialogue with DPPA/PBSO, providing a forward-looking platform to discuss the role of the Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF). This meeting marked a key opportunity for PBC members to engage with DPPA/PBSO on the Fund’s strategic direction, operational modalities, and future priorities.?Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) Elizabeth Spehar provided Commission members with an overview of the PBF’s functioning, including how allocations are determined, the criteria for country eligibility, and the Fund’s main financing channels. She also outlined thematic and geographic priorities for 2025 and offered a preview of the planned utilization of assessed contributions in 2026.?Commission members also heard first-hand experiences of engaging with the PBF from two Member States, represented by their Permanent Representatives to the United Nations: Ericq Pierre (Haiti) and Issa Konfourou (Mali). Additionally, the UN Resident Coordinator in Mali, Khassim Diagne, joined online to contribute to the discussion.?As envisioned in General Assembly resolution 78/257, this dialogue enabled Commission members to provide strategic advice to the Secretariat on the use of the PBF, reinforcing the Fund’s role as a critical instrument for sustaining peace and responding to evolving peacebuilding needs.?

19 February 2025 - Peacebuilding Commission adopts 2025 provisional Programme of Work

On 19 February, the Peacebuilding Commission convened at the ambassador level to adopt its 2025 provisional Programme of Work, marking a pivotal year ahead with key anniversaries for Women, Peace and Security and Youth, Pease and Security. Member States reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening peacebuilding impact, emphasizing national ownership, inclusivity, and resilience. The session highlighted the need for enhanced coherence across the UN system, deeper engagement with regional organizations and International Financial Institutions, and innovative financing for sustainable peace efforts. Discussions underscored the importance of gender-responsive peacebuilding, and reinforced the Commission’s advisory role. The Commission stands ready to implement its 2025 agenda with a focus on action-oriented and results-driven peacebuilding, while ensuring meaningful participation of women and youth.

30 January 2025 - Peacebuilding Commission opens 2025 session with new leadership

The Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) convened on 30 January and elected new officers for its 19th session. Germany was elected as the new Chair, taking over from Brazil, which remains as Vice-Chair. Japan, Poland, and Morocco were also elected as Vice-Chairs, doubling the number of Vice-Chairs from two to four in the 19th Session. The Commission also re-elected Morocco, Brazil, and Sweden as the Chairs of the Country-Specific Configurations on the Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau, and Liberia, respectively. In his opening remarks, the Secretary-General, António Guterres, saluted the Commission for its advisory role to the Security Council, including in the context of UN Mission Transitions, and called for a strengthening of the PBC through this year’s Review of the Peacebuilding Architecture and for a “quantum leap” of USD 500 million per year in financing for the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF).

22 January 2025 - Ambassadorial-level meeting of the Country-Specific Configuration on Guinea-Bissau

On 22 January, the Peacebuilding Commission held an Ambassadorial-level meeting of its Guinea-Bissau Configuration to discuss the country's peacebuilding priorities. The session included briefings from Carlos Pinto Pereira, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Barrie Freeman, the Deputy SRSG of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahe, Geneviève Boutin, the Resident Coordinator in Bissau, and Denise Indeque, a civil society representative, all emphasizing the need for coordinated support to address structural limitations. Outlining his government's peacebuilding goals, the Minister highlighted the organization of general elections in 2025 as an immediate priority for the country, recognizing sustainable development as a long-term goal. Member States praised the country’s macroeconomic reforms under the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Extended Credit Facility and called for support to strengthen national capacity and accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Discussions highlighted the Peacebuilding Fund’s critical contributions, through projects that address political inclusivity, human rights, and youth and women empowerment.

17 January 2025 - Ambassadorial-level meeting on the Inter-American Development Bank Framework

On 17 January, the Peacebuilding Commission convened a meeting to discuss the Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB) Framework for Supporting Populations in Situations of Fragility, Conflict, and Criminal Violence. The framework covers crisis-affected contexts as well as "pockets of fragility" in middle- income countries. The session highlighted the IDB’s commitment to addressing challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasizing the role of multilateral development banks as "agents for peace." Representatives from Ecuador, Guatemala, and Honduras shared insights on their peacebuilding progress and challenges. Discussions underscored the importance of collaboration between regional banks like the IDB and the UN peacebuilding architecture to address root causes and foster sustainable development. Member States explored complementarity opportunities, reinforcing shared goals of promoting stability and resilience in the region.

15 January 2025 - Joint Ambassadorial-level Meeting with the PBF Advisory Group

On 15 January, the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) held its second meeting with the Advisory Group of the Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF). The first meeting between the two bodies was held in November 2023. The discussion centered on enhancing collaboration between the PBC and PBF, particularly in light of the Pact for the Future, the upcoming 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review and the assessed contribution to the PBF. Chaired by Sérgio Fran?a Danese, the Commission was briefed by Macharia Kamau, Chair of the PBF Advisory Group, Abakar Mouctar, Permanent Representative of Chad and Elizabeth Spehar, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support. They emphasized the growing urgency of peacebuilding efforts in today’s global environment and the value of supporting inclusive, nationally led peacebuilding programmes. Member States and the Advisory Group discussed ways to enhance collaboration through regular engagement, strategic advice to the Fund, and possible joint visits to countries supported by the PBF.

Written Advice to the Security Council on Central African Republic

On 23 June 2025, the Peacebuilding Commission provided advice to the Security Council in advance of a Council briefing on the Central African Republic. The Commission noted the importance of the upcoming local elections as a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to consolidate peace, democratic governance and long-term development. The Commission highlighted the remaining difficulties, such as revising the voters’ list, and commended the Government’s diligent efforts including at the political and legislative levels. The advice commended the current UN support, including that of a joint UN Women-MINUSCA initiative to help provide women with proper identification documents and PBF funding, but expressed concern over a lack of visibility over consolidated financial requirements. The Commission stressed that sustained international financial support is essential and called upon Member States and regional organizations to consider urgent financial and other support to foster a conducive environment for free, transparent and fair elections.

Written Advice to the Security Council on UN Peace Operations

On 21 March 2025, the Peacebuilding Commission provided advice to the Security Council Advice to the Security Council on advancing adaptability in United Nations peace operations.? The advice emphasized the political nature of conflict resolution and the central role of UN peace operations, both political and peacekeeping, in achieving international peace and security. It emphasized sequenced, achievable mandates aligned with national peacebuilding priorities, alongside coherent transitions to avoid security vacuums.?The PBC called for early, sustained dialogue with host States, inclusion of women and youth, regional cooperation, particularly with the African Union, and system-wide coherence. The advice also highlighted the need for clear communication, national ownership, and predictable, diversified funding through voluntary, assessed, and innovative sources. The PBC urged leveraging best practices to support integrated, people-centered peacebuilding across the mission lifecycle.?

Peacebuilding Commission invites CARICOM to participate as a standing observer

On 30 January, the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission extended a standing invitation to the Caribbean Community to participate in all meetings of the PBC. Following up on recommendations contained in the Pact for the Future, this new relationship between the Commission and the Caribbean Community is an important step towards enhancing cooperation with regional organizations and building strong ties that will certainly improve coordination on peacebuilding and conflict prevention.
