Secretary-General's remarks at a joint press encounter upon arrival in India with Natwar Singh, Minister of External Affairs of India

Press events | Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General

SG: My wife and I are very happy to be back. You've had very exciting developments. I am referring to the wonderful discussions with China, peace talks with Pakistan, and of course we had a chance to meet the Prime Minister during the 50th commemoration of the Bandung conference.

And I hope during my stay here, we will have the chance to discuss the UN reforms in addition to other issues of interest between the two of us, but the UN reform in particular because we believe that there cannot be security without development and there cannot be development without security and we will have neither unless we respect human rights.

We also believe that the UN institutions should be strengthened, and of course you have all heard about the proposal for the expansion of the Security Council, which I hope as part of the reform proposals will be approved this year by the Member States.

Thank you very much.
