Press events | Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General

SG: I want to thank the Wali for the reception he gave us. Myself and my team have had a very useful trip to South Darfur. I've seen things on the ground for myself and I've had the opportunity to thank the Wali for the reconciliation efforts that he is doing here, bringing the tribes together, working with them so they can live in harmony and working with the African Union troops and the police to ensure security for the IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons). We also indicated that it is essential that we have security not only for the humanitarian work but also for eventual reconstruction and recovery, and that there can be no development without security and there can be no security without development. The international community hopes that peace will come to Sudan and we should really press hard at the political level in Abuja to get the long-term agreement that is required.?.
