Synopsis

Objectives

The project aims to enhance the capacity of key stakeholders at the community, national, and regional levels to design and implement comprehensive short, medium, and long-term initiatives aimed at preventing genocide and related crimes by addressing and mitigating their underlying risk factors.

Components

The project’s main components include supporting the African Union Special Envoy for the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide and Other Mass Atrocities and the African Centre for Genocide Prevention (ACGP) in developing a mapping of existing frameworks, tools, challenges, and stakeholders involved in genocide and atrocity prevention efforts in Africa, including those related to countering and addressing hate speech. It also provides technical assistance in developing research frameworks, policy recommendations, and prevention strategies; develops training manuals and online courses based on OSAPG policy papers on addressing and countering hate speech and for mediators working in contexts at risk of, or where atrocity crimes have allegedly been committed; and supports the mainstreaming of conflict analysis focused on genocide prevention and hate speech mitigation through the UNSDCF development process in countries experiencing heightened human rights violations and increased risk factors for genocide.
