What we do

Overview

The System?Wide Evaluation Office conducts system?wide evaluations and provides evidence on the collective contribution of the United Nations development system to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Annual Report of the Executive Director is prepared in accordance with resolution 79/226 of the General Assembly for consideration of the Economic and Social Council at the Operational Activities for Development Segment.

The report provides an overview of the work of the office and highlights lessons learned from system-wide evaluation. It also provides information on Cooperation Framework evaluations at country level.

Mechanisms to enhance oversight, coordination, collaboration and partnerships

United Nations Evaluation Group (UNEG)

  • The Office plays an active role within the (UNEG).
  • In 2025, the Office contributed to the work of the Evaluation Synthesis and Artificial Intelligence Working Groups and contributed to a Task Force to redesign the UNEG evaluation database with an updated taxonomy informed by learning from the Offices' 2024 pilot of artificial intelligence-assisted evidence-mapping in 2024.

Collaboration with UN Oversight Bodies

  • The Office maintains regular engagement with key oversight bodies, including the and the , to discuss ongoing work in the areas of evaluation, and to share experience and learning.

Engagement with UN Entity Evaluation Offices

  • Close collaboration with evaluation offices and units across UN entities underpins system-wide accountability.
  • Entities contribute through participation in evaluation management groups, co-funding and in?kind support, and dissemination activities.
  • These contributions strengthen shared ownership, use of findings, and follow?up to system-wide evaluations.


Global SDG Synthesis Coalition

  • Through its partnership with the, we contributes to strengthening evidence on “what works” for sustainable development.
  • In 2025, this collaboration helped unlock significant technical and financial support, including major investments in global evidence synthesis infrastructure.


Engagement with External Evaluation Networks

  • The Office also collaborates with international evaluation networks, including the OECD DAC Network on Development Evaluation () and , providing strategic inputs and supporting dialogue on multilateral effectiveness and UN sustainable development system reform.

Partnerships for Thematic Learning and Outreach

  • The Office collaborates with UN entities such as , , , , and to promote thematic learning and dissemination of evaluation findings, including joint events and webinars.
